Press Release

Sperone Westwater is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Greg Colson.  Included is a series of Colson’s signature “Pie Chart” constructions that parody the endless stream of analysis, typically seen in the sleek, nonmaterial setting of computer screens or corporate reports.  Colson plays up the material and visual elements, infusing his pie charts with a kind of flatfooted, unrefined, physical presence.  Topics include:

• Qualms About the Web
• Activities While Driving
• How to Look Your Best

The intended meaning of the information gets muddled as a result of the incidental and accidental associations that occur between the icons.

In another group of “Intersection” sculptures, clusters of signposts evoke a look inward, as street names and attached objects allude to personal experience, situations and a sense of places.  The resulting tangles of object and meaning project from the wall – clouds of memory – specific yet not wholly tangible.  Greg Colson lives and works in Los Angeles.  This is his third exhibition at Sperone Westwater (1990, 1994, 2001).
