Sperone Westwater is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Teresa Faini.

These paintings are part of the artist’s “animalier” series, a group of canvases which have been shown at Franco Maria Ricci and Galleria Vivita in Florence.  According to the artist, this series of paintings, which insert animals in the place of humans into recognizable old master paintings, came about as the result of examining and admiring the old master portraits.  “As I was getting closer to the works of art, I was affected by the pigments, the supports, the preparations of the varnishes, the work, even the tradition in the painting that gives dignity to the image. This study of notions and experiences is work as well as intellectual texture. Through this path I reached neither to copy the images by using similar techniques as the painter, nor to an actual portrait transposition but a trusted, personal reading of what is portrayed.”

Faini, born in Milan in 1954, currently lives and works in Florence.  This is the artist’s first exhibition at Sperone Westwater.
